Conservation & Care
A light touch
OUR PHILOSOPHY
We believe historic paintings should be preserved with sensitivity, respect and professional judgement. Conservation is undertaken where appropriate to stabilise, clean and present works while retaining their age, character and integrity.
Old Master paintings are historical objects as well as works of art. Their surfaces, supports, frames and previous restorations form part of their history. Our approach is therefore measured and respectful: conservation should enhance legibility and stability without erasing the evidence of age or the character of the object.
Prepared for display, preserved for the future.
PROFESSIONAL STEWARDSHIP
Treatment Where Appropriate
Paintings may be cleaned, stabilised, retouched or revarnished where this improves preservation and presentation.
Respect for Originality
Conservation is undertaken with sensitivity to original materials, historic surfaces and the natural signs of age.
Assessment
Each work is reviewed for surface condition, structural stability, past restoration, varnish condition, frame condition and presentation.
Gallery-ready, without being over-restored.
Our aim is not to make historic paintings look new. The best conservation allows a work to read clearly while preserving its authenticity. Craquelure, age, historic stretcher marks, old lining, minor abrasion or previous restoration may all be part of a painting’s long life. Where relevant, these factors are assessed and explained to collectors.

FRAMES & DISPLAY
Frames are an essential part of the way Old Master paintings are experienced. Where a painting retains an appropriate period or antique frame, we aim to preserve and present it sympathetically. Frames may be cleaned, stabilised or repaired where necessary, always with the intention of complementing the painting rather than overwhelming it.
